NOVEMBER: VILLA IN LOENEN COMPLETED

The biologic villa in Loenen aan de Vecht, designed by architect Jules Zwijsen in cooperation with the clients and technically designed by aayu, is completed. From pure materials, a smart mass heating system to shielded electrical installation all aspcets of biologic building found their way into the design. The inhabitants are very happy with the result.

MARCH: DESIGN ECOLOGICAL RESTAURANT IN LANDSMEER

In the village Landsmeer, at the entrance of recreation park 'Twiske', is a place with a stunning view over the lake 'Kerkebreek'. On this spot, commissioned by a group of entrepreneurs from the local village, aayu will design a timber restaurant according to the principles of biological architecture.

JULY: BOOK ABOUT 'DE POTGIETER'

At the request of the municipality in Amsterdam West, aayu has made a book about the biological renovation of the monumental school ‘De Potgieter’ on the Da Costakade in Amsterdam. In the book is explained how sustainable renovation is possible while maintaining the cultural and historical value. You can find wonderful contributions by Birgit Dulski (NIBE / Nyenrode Business University), Paul Rosenberg (Office of Monuments and Archaeology, Amsterdam), DGMR, Elise van den Toren (Combiwel) and Huub van de Ven (Cultural Heritage Agency of the Dutch government). The preface is by city council member Godfried Lambriex.

JUNE: BEE SHRINE IS REVEALED

The Bee Shrine has been revealed by Aayu on the 22nd of June. Despite the bad weather there was a good turnout! Residents from the neighborhood and friends have written their wish on a wooden board and hung it to one of the nails of the Bee Shrine. Then there was a BBQ and live music provided by Amado and Sam, and finally a grand bonfire of all the rest wood. MORE

JUNE: BEE SHRINE PROJECT

The Bee Shrine is an intervention on a vacant lot in Amsterdam where wild flowers grow. On Saturday 22nd of June, longest day of the year, the Bee Shrine will be revealed. We will celebrate this with a picnic. Come, bring your own mat and something to eat, we will provide music. MORE

MAY: OPENING OF THE POTGIETER

On May 15th, city council member Godfried Lambriex officially opened the Potgieter, the monumental school in Amsterdam West that has been biologically renovated by aayu. What a success! Users showed their work and aayu provided several tours through the building. There were also various activities for the children such as performances and workshops. MORE

MARCH: MEZZANINE FAMILY FITNESS CLUB DELIVERED

A suspended mezzanine is added in the Family Fitness Club in Langenfeld, Germany. The mezzanine makes the gym a lot more spacious, adding light and air. A broad oak handrail adds a kind of 'cruiseship'-feeling. MORE

MARCH: NOMINATION POTGIETER SCHOOL FOR PRIZE ENERGETIC RESTAURATION

The Potgieter school is nominated for the national prize 'Energetic Restauration' by 'Kenniscentrum Noorderuimte'. Out of 35 recently delivered projects 5 are selected as examples for integrating cultural heritage and sustainability. A fusion in which the biologic design of aayu succeeded extremely well according to the jury. MORE

NOVEMBER: POTGIETER SCHOOL DELIVERED

The 'biologic renovation' of the Potgieter school, a municipal heritage building in Amsterdam Old West, is finished. The transformation to multifunctional child care institution with neighborhood facilities followed the principles of biologic building and took place in close co-operation with the heritage department of the municipality. The result: high energy-, health- and heritage scores and a very happy user. MORE

SEPTEMBER: BEE DAY WITH AAYU-BEES

Daniel Höwekamp of aayu architects keeps bees on Kinderboerderij Westerpark in Amsterdam, together with Patrick Koning. In July the first aayu-honey was harvested, collected and produced by the busy 'Kinderboerde-bijen'. In September there is a bee-day for young and old, info here. JUNE: APARTMENT IN SOUTH OF AMSTERDAM DELIVERED

FEBRUARY: JURY 'GREENEST DISTRICT OF AMSTERDAM'

Daniel Höwekamp of aayu is member of the jury in the competition 'Greenest district of Amsterdam' by Partij van de Dieren published next month. Last years there are many green roofs made, though most are sedum which produces less biodiversity and has less climate effects than wild grass roofs.

The roof is completed, the façade is being plastered in traditional ways. The house is a pilot project; historical building methods are rediscovered through the re-use of local organic materials. The structure is insulated from the inside and regains its historic appearance through the careful crafting.MORE

SEPTEMBER 2011: OPEN HOUSE ON CONSTRUCTION SITE, AMSTERDAM

The open house on the construction site of Da Vinci school in Amsterdam, as part of the 'Dutch Green Building Week' catched much attention; city councellors Dirk de Jager and Godfried Lambriex were enthousiastic guests as well.

AUGUST 2011: B-HOUSE SERIES COMPLETED

The concept phase of the B-House is completed. The 100% natural and recyclable house can be implemented as all-year home or holiday lodge and offers the client several individual choices.

Based on an open space under a pitched roof, with a central warming core for bath, cooking, sleeping and playing, the B-house is available in the Netherlands, Germany, Austria and Italy.

MAY 2011: DA VINCI SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION IN FULL PROCESS

The construction process progresses after many surprising, both beautiful and difficult discoveries behind demolished false ceilings. The challenge to build without polyurethane adhesive, polyurethane foam, resins, PVC and rock wool, requires effort from all parties.

MARCH 2011: START STUDY GREEN OFFICES

aayu starts a study on the transformation possibilities of long term vacant office buildings. Buildings must be made attractive to new users and profitable for owners by minimal physical and functional changes. The addition of plants and application of natural and rough materials can provide a valuable and healthy building.

JAN 2011: OPENING FITNESSCLUB

After an intensive building and renovation process the gym in Langenfeld (Germany) opens with a party for the old and new members, neighbours, family and friends.

DEC 2010: PATIO HOUSE

aayu finalizes the research into the possibilities of patio houses as an urban housing type for the Netherlands. All findings will be compiled in the book 'Green patio homes in high density’.

NOV 2010: START B-HOUSE

aayu starts the B-house project, a series of models of biological (=B) wooden houses based on the ecologic principles of bees: ‘The more You take, the more You give’. Large, open spaces are combined with small, private alcoves. The first B-house will be built in Almere.

APR 2010: NOMINATION IN COMPETITION

‘Floating rock house’ is one of the seven nominated designs in the competition 'sustainable floating houses’ that has been issued by the city of Amsterdam. A requirement was to use the ‘cradle-to-cradle’ and an autarkic energy concept. The result is a living rock in the water, overgrown by grass and moss, which functions as a miniature ecosystem. MAR 2010: RENOVATION OF SOCIAL HOUSING

aayu gets the assignment to ecological renovate 800 m2 of social housing. The two buildings from 1900 in Amsterdam Oud West remain occupied, so the challenge is to achieve a maximum comfort increase with minimal interference according to the principles of URBAN BIO LOGIC.

DEC 2009: NOMINATION ‘GROENE SPELD’ PRICE

Daniel Höwekamp of aayu is nominated for the first ‘Groene Speld’ Prize with the biological apartment in the Amsterdam Oud West. This prize is meant for a person or company operating in the field of sustainable existing and / or new building in Amsterdam.
